Management Science department is one of the three departments in the school of business. It offers courses to PhD, MBA, EMBA and Bachelor of Commerce students, who also take units from the other two departments namely Accounting & Finance and Business Administration. The department also service students who take bachelor of Education (Business Studies), Bachelor of Economics and Finance.
The courses are facilitated through regular, evening /part time, Weekend, open learning, institutional based programmes. These programmes are offered in various campuses which include Nyeri, Kitui, Parklands, Ruiru , Migori, Embu, Nakuru, City and Mombasa campuses.

The Mission Statement
The mission of management science department is to provide quality education and training, promote scholarship, service, innovation and creativity and inculcate moral values for sustainable individual and societal development.

Objectives of the Department of Management Science
The broad objectives of the department of management science are to:-

  • Promote the development and expansion of higher education opportunities through initiation of new programmes and alternative modes of delivery using among others, modern technologies.
  • Enhance the level of participation in research, dissemination and preservation of knowledge for both academic and societal development.
  • Provide an environment that nurtures excellence and high standards of professionalism in teaching, learning, research and community service
  • Departmentalize quality assurance practices in planning, implementation and evaluation of the university’s core function in order to meet the set goals.

Teaching and Learning

In order to remain competitive, the department’s programmes have to be market driven and of high quality. This calls for review of the current programmes and development of relevant and responsive curricula, improvement on modes of teaching and supervision, and enriching the academic programmes.

 

Research, Training and Consultancy Activities

In order to attain academic excellence, the department has to have a serious research orientation and by extension be involved in consultancy and training activities aimed at the industry and the community. Further, the department aims at developing local case studies particularly targeted for improved teaching and learning initiatives.

Linkages, Marketing and Corporate Image

To ensure sustainability, quality delivery and support, it is important that the department establishes linkages with local and international institutions both private and government. To promote the departmental activities and improve corporate image, the department will institutionalize marketing of its activities.

Management science is one of the three departments in the school of Business. It offers Certificate, Diploma , Bachelor of Commerce, MBA, EMBA and PHD.

Certificate  students are expected to take 12 units to qualify for graduation.The program duration is one academic year.
The Programmes are offered through Full-time, Part-time and Distance learning.

Diploma In

Diploma students are expected to take  18 units to qualify for graduation.The program duration is two academic years.
The Programmes are offered through Full-time, Part-time and Distance learning.

Bachelor of Commerce
Entry Requirements
Bachelor of Commerce students are expected to take a minimum of 50 units to qualify for graduation, During first and second year of study all the units are common, in third year, students move to specialization of their choice, Management science department currently offers two areas of specialization.

The department is in the process of reviewing the curriculum to introduce new areas of specialization in the BCOM which are Management Information Systems and Procurement and Supply Chain management Master of Business Administration (MBA)Entry Requirements

        • A holder of a bachelor's degree with at least upper second class honors degree of Kenyatta University or any other recognized university.
        • Those with Second Class (Lower Division) may be considered on condition that they attained Grade C and above in the units relevant to their areas of specialization and KCSE (less than C, must have a certificate and a diploma)
      1. Master of business Administration students are expected to take a minimum of 20 units to qualify for graduation, During first year of study all the units are common, in second year, students move to specialization of their choice, Management science offers two options:
      1. M.B.A (Project Management option)
      1. M.B.A (Management Information Systems option).

    1. Executive Master of Business Administration (EMBA)
      Entry Requirements

      • First degree from Kenyatta University or any other recognized institution.
      • In addition the applicants must have served in a senior management position for at least two years.

      The program is designed to take one academic year consisting of three semesters. A total of 16 units are taken, consisting of 12 taught units and a project equivalent to 4 taught units. Students are required to take 4 taught units per semester. During the third semester students will in addition be required to register for the project. The program aims to provide higher education opportunities to executives in both the public and private sectors, through flexibility in timing and course delivery.Download EMBA Course Description.

    2. Doctor of Philosophy in Business (PhD)
      Entry Requirements
      The following shall be eligible for admission:

      • A holder of a Masters of Business Administration (MBA) degree or its equivalent in Business from Kenyatta University or any other institution recognized by Kenyatta University Senate.
      • A holder of a Masters degree from Kenyatta University in areas of specialization relevant to disciplines in the school of Business or any other institution recognized by the Kenyatta University Senate.

      The Program takes a minimum of four years and maximum of six years for part time students. The Program consists of a total of seventeen (17) units comprising of course work (9 units) and thesis (8 units). Students embark on the thesis upon completion of the coursework.

      Management Science offers four options namely:
      • PhD (Project Management)
      • PhD (Actuarial Science)
      • PhD (Management Science)
      • PhD (Management Information Systems)
